Dear Mr. Aldana,

My name is Priya Shah, and I have lived in the Brookfield neighbourhood for almost six years, just a short walk from your shelter on Camden Street. Last Saturday I attended the open house you held for the shelter's tenth anniversary, and I left with a very good impression. Your colleague Rosa showed my daughter and me around the new cat wing, and she mentioned that the shelter is looking for weekend volunteers this fall.

I would like to apply to be one of them. When I was a college student in Winnipeg, I volunteered at a rescue centre for two years, mostly walking dogs and helping with adoption events, and I have missed that kind of work ever since we moved here. My weekdays are busy because I manage a small bakery downtown, but my Saturday and Sunday mornings are free, and I could commit to one four hour shift every weekend.

There is one thing I should mention. My daughter, Anika, is eleven, and she is the reason I finally wrote this email. She has been asking to volunteer together ever since the open house. Rosa thought children could help with some tasks if a parent stays with them, but she was not sure of the minimum age, and she suggested I check with you. If Anika cannot take part yet, I am still happy to volunteer on my own, though I know she will be disappointed.

Could you also tell me what the application involves? Your website mentions an orientation session and a short interview, but the dates listed there are from last spring, so I assume they have not been updated. I filled out the online form once already; please let me know if I should submit it again.

Part 1 の採点方法

リーディングはコンピューター採点で、正解 1 問につき 1 点、誤答による減点はありません。Part 1 は採点対象 38 問のうち 11 問を占め、最も易しいパートでありながら大きな得点源です。

1 問 1 点の積み上げ

解答は正解か不正解かだけで、未回答は不正解扱いです。減点がない以上、当てずっぽうでも空欄よりは常に有利で、4 分の 1 の確率が残ります。

38 問がレベルに換算

38 問の素点は CELPIP Level 1〜12 に換算され、問題の難易度で調整されるため、実施回が違っても公平になるよう設計されています。

CELPIP Level は CLB と同値

対応は 1 対 1 で、CELPIP 9 は CLB 9 です。Express Entry で多い CLB 9 目標なら 38 問中およそ 31 問の正解が必要で、全パート合計で落とせるのは 5〜7 問だけです。

採点されないパートの存在

採点対象外の実験パートが 1 つ、リーディングのどこかに挿入されることがあります。見分けは付かないので、すべてのパートを本番として解きましょう。

11 分で成立する解き方

手紙をプレビュー約 30 秒

誰が誰に、何のために書いたのか、そして書き手が何かを依頼しているかを押さえます。「書き手の望み」はほぼ毎回問われるので、配られる紙にはっきりメモしましょう。

先に設問を読む1〜2 分

前半 6 問にざっと目を通し、言い換えできないキーワード、人名、数字、引用符内の語に印を付けます。それ以外の設問文と選択肢は、すべて言い換えられている前提で臨みます。

問 1〜6 に解答約 4 分

キーワードで該当箇所を特定し、その前後を丁寧に読みます。正解の選択肢は本文の言い換えで、一言一句同じ表現は決して使われません。語句ではなく意味を探しましょう。

返信を完成させる約 4〜5 分

返信を読み、意味とトーンで 5 つの空欄を埋めます。4 つの選択肢は文法的にはたいてい全部成立します。最後の 30 秒で全問に解答済みかを確認しましょう。

画面に表示される指示文

これらは Part 1 の実際の画面指示と頻出の設問パターンです。一目で認識できるまで慣れておけば、本番の時間を指示ではなく手紙そのものに使えます。

減点につながるミス

意味ではなく語句で選ぶSpecific Information

正解が本文とまったく同じ言葉で書かれることはない、と公式が明言しています。手紙の語句をそのまま繰り返す選択肢は、正解よりも罠であることの方が多いのです。

流し読みで変更を見落とすSpecific Information

日付や時間、予定の変更は段落の中ほどに埋め込まれるのが定番です。冒頭だけ読んで答えると、そうした問題はひっかけの選択肢に直行します。

空欄を文法だけで解くSecond Text

空欄の 4 つの選択肢は、たいていどれも文法的には成立します。正解は 2 通の手紙の両方と意味とトーンが一致する唯一の選択肢で、文法だけでは決められません。

人物・時制・動作の取り違えInference

書き手と受け手、確認と日程変更、過去の出来事と今後の予定の混同こそ、ひっかけの選択肢の材料です。名前と時制が出てきたら速度を落としましょう。

時計に問題を持っていかれるTime Management

Part 1 の時間が切れるとテストは先へ進み、戻れません。未選択のドロップダウンは 0 点です。1 分以上悩んだら最有力の推測を入れて先へ進み、パート内で後から直しましょう。

Part 1 についてよくある質問

後から答えを変えられますか?

Part 1 の中でなら可能で、パートの時間が切れるまで何度でも変更できます。ただし次のパートへ進むと二度と戻れないので、見直しはパート内で済ませましょう。

誤答で減点されますか?

されません。採点は正解数だけを数えるので、間違えても失うものはなく、空欄は得点になりません。公式も全問解答を勧めており、当てずっぽうでも 25 パーセントの確率があります。

CLB 9 には何問まで落とせますか?

目安として、採点対象 38 問中 31 問以上の正解が必要で、全体で落とせるのは 5〜7 問程度です。Part 1 は 4 パートで最も易しいので、高得点を狙うならほぼ満点を目標にしましょう。
