Dear Mr. Aldana,
My name is Priya Shah, and I have lived in the Brookfield neighbourhood for almost six years, just a short walk from your shelter on Camden Street. Last Saturday I attended the open house you held for the shelter's tenth anniversary, and I left with a very good impression. Your colleague Rosa showed my daughter and me around the new cat wing, and she mentioned that the shelter is looking for weekend volunteers this fall.
I would like to apply to be one of them. When I was a college student in Winnipeg, I volunteered at a rescue centre for two years, mostly walking dogs and helping with adoption events, and I have missed that kind of work ever since we moved here. My weekdays are busy because I manage a small bakery downtown, but my Saturday and Sunday mornings are free, and I could commit to one four hour shift every weekend.
There is one thing I should mention. My daughter, Anika, is eleven, and she is the reason I finally wrote this email. She has been asking to volunteer together ever since the open house. Rosa thought children could help with some tasks if a parent stays with them, but she was not sure of the minimum age, and she suggested I check with you. If Anika cannot take part yet, I am still happy to volunteer on my own, though I know she will be disappointed.
Could you also tell me what the application involves? Your website mentions an orientation session and a short interview, but the dates listed there are from last spring, so I assume they have not been updated. I filled out the online form once already; please let me know if I should submit it again.

Part 1 怎樣計分
閱讀由電腦計分,答對一條得一分,答錯不扣分。Part 1 佔閱讀 38 條計分題中的 11 條,全卷最容易的部分同時也是一大塊分數。
逐題計點
每條題只有對錯之分,留空當錯。因為答錯不扣分,亂猜都好過留空,起碼保住四分之一機會。
38 條換一個 Level
38 條計分題的原始分會換算成 CELPIP Level 1 至 12,並按題目難度校準,確保不同場次的考卷同樣公平。
CELPIP Level 等於 CLB
換算是一比一:CELPIP 9 就是 CLB 9。以快速通道常見的 CLB 9 為目標,大約要答對 38 條中的 31 條,即全卷只容錯約五至七條。
可能有不計分部分
一個額外的實驗部分可能出現在閱讀任何位置,不計分,但外觀與計分部分完全一樣,所以每一部分都要當真來答。
行得通的 11 分鐘讀法
預讀原信約 30 秒
先弄清誰寫給誰、為甚麼寫、寫信人有沒有提出請求。「寫信人想要甚麼」幾乎每卷必考,在考場提供的紙上明確記下來。
先讀題目1 至 2 分鐘
掃一遍頭 6 條題,圈出改寫不了的關鍵字:人名、數字、引號內的字眼。其餘的題幹和選項,預期全部會被改寫。
答第 1 至 6 條約 4 分鐘
用關鍵字定位到相關段落,再細讀前後文。正確選項是原文的改寫,永遠不會逐字照抄,所以要找意思,不是找字眼。
補完回信約 4 至 5 分鐘
讀回信,按意思和語氣補 5 個空格,四個選項通常在文法上都通。最後留 30 秒檢查每一條題都已作答。

會丟分的錯誤
對字眼不對意思Specific Information
官方明言正確答案永遠不會用原文一模一樣的字眼寫出。逐字重複原信字眼的選項,多數是陷阱而不是答案。
掃過去,漏了改期Specific Information
信件慣常把日期、時間或計劃的變動埋在段落中間。只讀開頭就作答,這些題就直接送給干擾項。
只用文法解空格Second Text
每個空格的四個選項通常在文法上都成立。正確那個是唯一在意思和語氣上同時貼合兩封信的選項,單靠文法定不出來。
混淆人物、時態和動作Inference
把寫信人當收信人、把確認當改期、把過去的事當將來的計劃,正是干擾項的設計材料。見到名字和時態就放慢。
讓時間帶走題目Time Management
Part 1 時間一到便永遠翻頁,留空的下拉選單就是零分。一條題卡超過一分鐘,先填最有把握的猜測再前進,部分之內隨時可以改。
關於 Part 1 的常見問題
答錯會扣分嗎?
不會。計分只數答對的題,答錯沒有損失,留空也不會得分。官方建議每條都要答,亂猜也有百分之二十五機會。
想拿 CLB 9 最多可以錯幾條?
大約要在 38 條計分題中答對 31 條或以上,即全卷只容錯約五至七條。Part 1 是四部分中最易的,高分考生應以近乎全對為目標。
